Exodus: Bread from Heaven

LESSON SUMMARY

Why Manna?

This was a special food that mysteriously appeared every morning on its own, 6 days a week.

They didn’t have to do anything to get the manna — they didn’t have to plant or toil or harvest … it just appeared and they could enjoy it freely. Taught them to depend and trust in God to provide for them.

It was enough to sustain the Israelites for 40 years in the desert … special energy pack?

It was a good daily reminder to the Israelites that the Lord was with them always — since they saw the 10 plagues and the parting of the Red Sea and still questioned whether God led them out to die in the desert.

Jesus our Manna

Thousands of years later, when Jesus was feeding the 5,000, he brought up the time the Israelites’ ancestors ate manna (bread from heaven) in the wilderness.

Then Jesus said many times, “I am the Bread of life from Heaven.” (John 6:31)

Later Jesus explained, “This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world … I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you”. (John 6:51-53)

How is Jesus our Manna?

• Our relationship with Him is based on His grace — like the Manna, we don’t have to plant or toil or harvest to earn it — we just receive freely, as much as we need
• Jesus is enough — He is all we need — just like how the Manna sustained the Israelites for 40 years! We just need to depend and trust on Him.

Memory Verse

John 6:35
“And Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.’”

Exodus: Unleavened Bread

LESSON SUMMARY

Jesus is our Unleavened bread

How does the unleavened bread (Matzah bread) remind us of Jesus?

1)      Striped:

Can you see the stripes on this bread?

Do you know Jesus was whipped until His whole back was striped like this?

And the Bible tells us that it was because of His stripes that we have His healing.

Isaiah 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: and  by his stripes we are healed.

2)      Pierced:

Can you see the little holes along the bread? The dough is pierced with a small wheel with sharp teeth (called a “redler” )before baking to allow air bubbles to escape — this prevents the dough from rising while in the oven.

When Jesus was put on the cross, his hands and feet were pierced by nails. When He was hanging there, to check if he was really dead, the Roman soldier pierced Jesus’ side with a sharp spear, and water and blood flowed out (John 19:34) which probably meant His heart had broken (no more alive).

John 19:37 And again another scripture says, They shall look on him whom they pierced.  

3)      Burnt:

The bread was burnt/baked in the oven.

Fire is a picture of judgment. Jesus was burnt/judged for our sake.

4)      No leaven

Leaven is a picture of sin. Unleavened means “no leaven”, so “no sin”.

Jesus did not have any sin in Him! He was the only perfect man who ever lived.

1 John 3:5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.

Because of Jesus, we can also become unleavened bread. Jesus took all our sin on Himself on that cross. In exchange, we have His life and righteousness in us! Righteousness = no sin

2 Cor 5:21 God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

LESSON SUMMARY

 

God goes before us!

When the Israelites left Egypt, they didn’t have any GPS or Waze to tell them where to go. Instead, the Lord went before them and led the way. How?

During the day, He was seen as a pillar of cloud. The pillar of cloud also protects the Israelites from the heat of the sun, especially in the middle of the desert.

During the night, He was seen as a pillar of fire. The pillar of fire provides warmth to the Israelites in the cold of the night.

God went ahead of the Israelites — His presence gave them direction, protection and comfort!

Today, wherever we are and whatever we do, God also goes before us. He will lead us, guide us, protect us and comfort us always!

Jesus is our Deliverer

The Egyptians pursued the Israelites. They thought they had trapped them … out in the desert with the Red Sea blocking their way. The Israelites thought they were goners.

But God opened a way through their biggest obstacle (the Red Sea) for them to pass through safely. And God also used that same obstacle to destroy their enemies (the Egyptians)!

When Jesus was on earth, the devil thought he could destroy him by getting him killed.

What he didn’t expect was that God used the devil’s weapon — death (after all, the devil’s job is to steal, kill and destroy) — to destroy the curse of sin completely.
It’s like the devil threw a slingshot, but the stone came back and hit him in his head!

Jesus’ death on the cross opened the way for us through the waters of sin and death and destroyed the power of Satan over us!

We are free!

Jesus set us free!

We don’t have to do anything except walk in the way He has opened for us!

Jesus is our deliverer!

Moses: Let My People Go!

LESSON SUMMARY

Jesus is the Firstborn

The death of the firstborn in Egypt meant freedom for the Israelites.

The death of Jesus, the Firstborn over all creation (Col 1:15) — the One with no beginning, no end — meant freedom for all of us from sin and Satan’s bondage.

From Plagues to Blessings

Moses brought 10 plagues/curses to set the Israelites free.

Jesus died for our freedom and brought us into all God’s blessings — life, freedom, blessings, healing, rest, God’s love, acceptance etc etc.

We have all of Jesus’ inheritance as firstborn and heir of God.

Rom 8:17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ,…

Moses: Burning Bush

LESSON SUMMARY

Our God

He is personal: He calls us by name just as He called Moses by name — “Moses Moses”

He is a Covenantal God: He is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, keeping His promises and covenant with Abraham that his family will be a great nation.

He cares: He sees, hears and is concerned … whether for the Israelites or for you and me. When we are sad and trouble and think no one cares, remember that God cares and loves you very much.

He acts: He came to rescue the Israelites and bring them out of Egypt. He is always with us to help us and work all things out for good for us, even when we may not realise it.

God is the I AM

What does that mean?

It means God is God. He existed before the beginning of time. He is not created by anybody. He is the source of life and He never changes.

God needs no explanation. No description. No identification. Because He is God.

Jesus is the I AM

When Jesus was on earth, He revealed Himself to the Jews as “I AM”.
e.g. in John 8:59, he said, “Before Abraham was born, I am.”

Jesus was claiming to be God — the same God who spoke to Moses in the burning bush. And this made the Jews very angry, and they tried to kill him.

Through His teachings, Jesus often identified Himself as “I AM”: I AM the Bread of life, light of the world, door of the sheep, good shepherd, resurrection and the life, the way, truth and life, and the true vine.

Jesus is God. He is the source of life. He never changes!

We can come boldly

God told Moses: “Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals, for the place you are standing is holy ground.”

God is holy, and sinful man cannot come near Him. Moses was afraid of God and hid his face.

Today, because of Jesus, God gives us free access to Him. We can “come boldly to the throne of grace” and “obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Heb 4:16)

Thank you, Jesus. You are the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. You are the God of Moses. And you are the God of me!

Mother’s Day: Jesus is Smiling at Me

 

1. HOOK:

• Today is Mother’s Day. Who wants to thank God for their mother? (get 1-2 kids to share what they are thankful for)
• Who do you go to … When you are sick? When you are hungry? When you need help? When you are sad? When you did something wrong? When you have good news? When you are happy? (try to lead the kids to answer their mother or father)
• What would mummy and daddy do when you go to them? (hug, kiss, sayang etc)
• How many of you have fierce/strict parents? Even if you have the fiercest and strictest parents, do you think they still love you with all their hearts? Do you think that if you are in trouble, they will help you?
• How we view our parents will determine how we respond to them. If we see our mother and father as loving and kind, we will run to them no matter how we are feeling or what we have done because we know they will always have their arms open wide. But if we see our parents as always angry and mean, the minute we do something wrong, we will try to hide from them because we fear punishment.

2. LESSON: Jesus is Smiling at Me

• In the same way, how you picture God is how you will live your Christian life.
  Angry God = fear and dread
  Smiling God = happy, confident and blessed
• So it’s important to see the right “face”/picture of God.
• The Good News today is that God is NOT angry with us. He knows us through and through. He knows every bad thought we’ve had, every little lie we’ve told and every wrong thing we’ve done … and yet, He loves us more than anything.
• How is that possible for a holy God? That’s because all our sin has been put on the cross and paid for by Jesus! That’s how we can go from sinner to child of God. When God looks at us, He sees His perfect son, Jesus, and He smiles at us with so much love and joy.

Moses: Saved for a Purpose

 

LESSON SUMMARY

God promised to make Abraham’s descendants a great nation.

He sent Joseph to Egypt so he could prepare for the famine.

He brought 70 of Jacob’s family to Egypt to save them from the famine.

Even though the Pharaoh tried to oppress and kill the Israelites, it didn’t stop them from multiplying and growing into a great nation.

God saved Moses to accomplish His purposes

Despite Pharaoh’s order to kill all Israelites’ baby boys, God saved Moses in a miraculous way — allowing his own mother to take care of him and letting him be adopted into the princess’ family!

Do you know …

When Jesus was born, King Herod ordered all baby boys to be killed too. King Herod heard that there was a prophecy that a new king would be born, and he was afraid so he tried to get rid of all boys below 2 years old.

But an angel appeared to Jesus’ father, Joseph, in a dream, telling him to bring Jesus and his mother to Egypt. So Jesus was brought to Jesus and hid there until it was safe to return. (Matthew 2:8-20)

Conclusion

It seemed like a hopeless and dark time — both when Moses and Jesus was born — but through the hopelessness and darkness, God was putting His plan in motion to raise up a someone special to deliver His people from slavery.

As we study the life of Moses in the book of Exodus, we see how it’s a picture (or foreshadow) of God’s bigger and greater plan of salvation through the life and death of Jesus, many thousands of years later.
